Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
What is TMJ?
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome or TMJ is a pain in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. The jaw is the hinge that connects the jaw bone to the skull. Pain and limited movement can negatively impact day to day life.
What Causes TMJ?
TMJ is also commonly associated with cervical spine disorders, injury to the teeth or jaw, misalignment of the teeth or jaw, teeth grinding, poor posture, stress, arthritis, and gum chewing.
How Can We Help?
Active Wellness has been trained in assessment and rehabilitation of TMJ and Cervical spine disorders through the Central Institute for Human Performance (CIHP*). We have adopted their diagnostic protocol and guidelines for head, neck, and jaw pain.
Once the source of TMJ or Cervical spine pain has been identified, manual therapy techniques are used to relax, stretch, or mobilize the affected area. Many times treating TMJ or cervical spine issues require endurance exercises and motor control training for muscles of the jaw or neck.
Here at Active Wellness, we focus on coordinating care with current dental practitioners to employ all the best techniques and industry standard treatments.
Tips for TMJ Management
- Hot/Cold therapy
